Ellis Island

Post by wearesearching »

My Kazanovsky family emigrated to NYC from Southampton, England. I had found the manifest in 2009 after months and months of looking. Unfortunately, my hard drive crashed and my FTM backup was corrupted as well.

This is what I remember from then. The ship was the Umbria and according to my grandfather, Saul Morris' Naturalization, they arrived on or about 2 June 1906.
I have been looking for them since 09. The family consisted of Jacob, Zelda, Bessie, Harry, my grandmother Sheine-age 12 and their mother Chana Riva.

They were listed as Hebrew and being from Choinic. Also, there are Chasanofsky's on the ship, but they are not my family. I also remember that the K of the surname was not a K on the manifest and the rest of the name was also skewed.

If anyone loves a puzzle, I would ask for your assistance. This branch is now the only one that I cannot locate until after they arrived in NYC.

Thank you.....

There is a Chasanofsky family on a 10 June 1906 arrival of the Umbria: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipM ... 2246060179. If you are sure this is the ship, you could examine every page of the manifest. Or, you could try creative searches of this ship at http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html.

Thanks, but I have seen 1905, 06 and 07 of the Umbria. The Chasanofsky's are not who I am looking for. I would love to see the original manifests from Southampton to the US, but cannot locate.

Between 1892 and 1924, the Umbria never sailed out of Southampton, only Liverpool, according to http://stevemorse.org/ellis/boat.html.

I had found them on the Ellis Island site in 2009/February, but 3/9/09 my HD crashed and it never backed up the manifest. I remember that the name was greatly skewed and was definitely not Kazanovsky. I also remember that it absolutely said Southampton. The place of birth was Choinic, which I had not known until I found it. The first names, which I now look for, were Chana, Moshe or Mordche, Sheine, Zelde, Jacob or Yankel, Harry and Basse.

I guess that I will, one day run into them again. I have found everything else on them, so I will wait. Not patiently, but that was never one of my virtues.
